About

Friends of Diversity Organization (FoD) is a youth led non-governmental organization established in January 2017 and later was formally registered in October 2018 with the Registrar of Societies of Botswana.

The mission of FOD is to empower, educate and advocate for the rights of LGBTIQ+ youth of Botswana on personal development, mental health, economic and sexual reproductive health rights.

FOD was able to get a working office space through being hosted and mentored by DITSHWANELO-The Botswana Center for Human Rights. We have supported LGBTI youth in Botswana through peer support groups, counseling, personal development coaching among other initiatives.

In addition, we conducted mental health talks with LGBTIQ+ youth in Gaborone, Francistown, Tonota, Borolong and Tati-Siding from 2017 to early 2019.

In 2018, FOD was part of team that developed UNICEf `s online toolkit for young key populations. Over the past 2 years, FoD has managed to build a strong human rights movement through training and capacity building, advocating for policies and institutional practices that respect the human rights of vulnerable LGBTIQ+ youth.

FoD has built strategic relationships with various partners who believe in the important work we do as an organization. FoD has partnered with other civil society organizations such as BONELA, LEGABIBO, DITSHWANELO, AWOSHE, RAINBOW IDENTITY, ACHAP and some governmental departments to advance the sexual and reproductive health of LGBTI Youth through adopting a human rights approach. In 2018, FOD was part of the comprehensive human rights national strategy process (CHRISNAP).

Additionally, we participated in the national symposium on the establishment of Botswana national human rights institution that was organized by UNDP and ministry of international affairs. In terms of regional advocacy, FoD is a member of regional bodies including Universal health coverage (UHC), International AIDS society and The AIDS and Rights Alliance for southern Africa (ARASA). Currently, FOD is implementing Open Hands project which seeks to safeguard the mental wellbeing of LGBTI in Botswana amidst COVID 19 pandemic.
