Though the day is commemorated annually on the 17th, FOD celebrated IDAHOBIT in style on the 18th of May 2024-the day after in Gaborone at Thapong Visual Arts Centre. The commemoration was to remember LGBTI folks who have suffered and continue suffer due to different kinds phobias on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity and expression. In leu of the theme, there was also reflection on the monumental strides relating to justice we achieved in the LGBTIQ movement in Botswana such as the decriminalization case. The event also helped to unleash talents of Queer people through artwork, poetry, singing and dancing to demonstrate diversity. It is proven from the conversations at the IDAHOBIT we had that there is a need to raise awareness and foster a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by the LGBTIQI with respect to their rights and equality under the rule of law. The IDAHOBIT celebration was a reminder that community education and advocacy contribute to breaking down stereotypes, dispelling misconceptions, promoting empathy and creating a more informed and compassionate society towards LGBTIQ people. There was slightly over 202 people who attended IDAHOBIT event in person.
